I've never understood why "there isn't anything better than a guitar,
except for two guitars" - but I see something similar proving true, in the case of
Safri Duo's percussion.

Safri
play in a melodic way, exploiting a large dynamic area and expressive
tempos and accentuations which make voices clear and compact. We wouldn't
expect from percussionists to play in a way that would make pianists
feel jealous! However, replacing harpsichord or piano with percussion
makes Bach's music sometimes to resemble the African poly-rythmic webs. Add to these the natural subtlety of the
instruments and a good
recording and you will have a great company!
