As the question above states, I am not quite sure how he changes, though he obviously does. But yet, he remains ever compassionate and loving.
Do help me.

I think David's major change comes around the time the Uriah Heep is exposed. He is faced with several people who have characters that he either cannot see or cannot understand. (i.e. that he loves Steerforth, that he hates Uriah, but can't really say why, we see it early on in his dislike of Mr. Murdstone, he knows there is something bad about Murdstone, but can't put his finger on it). It's also after this time that he realizes his love for Agnes. His change is not really in his character, so much in his ability to discern the character of others.
