What is the significance of Steerforth's name?

Steerforth lead Em'ly away. He "steered" her in the wrong direction. Steer Forth. Steerforth also seemed to put up a false front, steering ohters in the wrong direction like David Copperfield.

The name steerforth seems to me to refer to one who leads the way, one who will be the first to try something new, one who is not afraid to jump in regardless of the expense to those around him. He moves forward at full speed but not knowing where he is going. The name is at once heroic and pompous. It is confident and arrogant. It is determined and selfish.
