The early chapters are about his happy childhood, the unfortunate marriage of his mother, her death and his 'exile' to the factory. Notice his relationship with Pegotty, the class-consiousness of his step father who didn't want him to play with Pegotty, etc. You can understand your question if you study these chapters thinking what would you miss about David Copperfield's life, character, future, etc., if any or some of these relationships were not in the story.
