Elusive Pan
Motionless on hind quarters head askance
A keen sight sweeps the cleaved escarpment baked by the relentless sun.
Cloven hoofed with coiled thigh sinews ready to dart,
you stop for a measured sniff of the breeze.
The afternoon heatwave beguiles the senses of men
but nothing escapes your gaze that drills into rustic hearts.
Nor can the wind muffle the melodic reed ruminations that entrance,
arrest, disarm and hold at bay all earthly evil designs.
There in the distance some movement, an audience ?
A flicker of emotion and bosom astir,
satisfied , lips drawn back with a wide smile
You scamper and climb higher to a rocky outcrop
before vanishing into distant silver olive canopy.
