With a heavy heart and moist eyes,
I behold your ruinous state in this barbaric jejune terrain,
There is no escape from that awful enemy;
The alchemy and ravages of time,
The toll and confrontations of many battles and
now the neglect, uncare through the millennia.
Thoughtful eyes can see the crumbled,
dilapidated facade that once boasted a majestic beauty;
bewildering sense of geometry, perfect friezes
chiseled in marble and wisdom articulated through marbled voices
that cry for former glories of Ephesus , Pergamom:
the golden cauldron on a tripod with eternal blue flame
dances before the entrance to Artemis Temple.
Dusty pages are turned slow and fine soot of the archived tome
fall into deep piled-carpet buried and remain hidden ;
layers upon layers of ancient debris piled in the quiet reading room.
With a heavy heart, an overflow from the eyes , a lament: O Ionia a deep love
within my bosom : your spirit is not forgotten while
Faroff in a distant horizon a rose-hued dawn breaks ,
and rare diffuse light gleams upon a white-marbled broken column
